Home Drywall Repair Tips
So you are currently looking at a big hole in the middle of your drywall, and unfortunately, there are no studs behind it, and the hole is too big for a traditional patch to cover. Well, not to worry all is not lost, the following are a few home drywall repair tips that you can try.
Step 1: Prepping the hole
Step 2: Bracing the backing
Step 3: Applying the patch
Step 4: Mudding and taping!
Prepping the Hole
Cut your hole so it is in a square, once you have done this, check to make sure that there are no utilities cables or pipes behind it. Once you have done this, you need to lightly sand the area so there are no bumps or ridges that will show through once you have finished. This will also help to get it ready for the mudding and taping that you will need to do.
Bracing the Backing
Size a block that you will need to put into the hole, and make it slightly larger than the hole height-wise, a 2×4 is probably the best as most timber frames in houses use these, although there are a few that have 2×6’s. Place the board into the hole and turn it in so it is snug in the space behind the sheetrock. If there is insulation present just push it out of the way for now. You can always fix it once you have secured the board to ensure good insulation.
Attaching with drywall screws at either end
Finish It Up
Once you have cut a piece of drywall and put it in the hole, you will need to screw it on to secure it. Then, you can mud and tape the edges, if you are working with a painted wall, we suggest that you sand the paint too, as this helps to blend the paint into the hole so it is not as noticeable. And that is it, fairly simple!
