Home Drywall Repair Tips

How to Repair Drywall: Common Ways to Fix Damaged Walls

If you live in a house enough time, sooner or later you will have to deal with damaged walls and ceilings. The interiors of most American homes are covered with drywall, or, as some call it in the trade, Sheetrock. In material of what you call it, drywall can be damaged easily, and not surprisingly, will be exacerbated in homes that have children and pets, all resulting in home drywall repair needing to be made.

The likes of dents, holes, cracks and peeling joint tape are sadly unavoidable when it comes to drywall repair issues, and they will need to be repaired before you can apply a fresh coat of paint.

SAFETY FIRST

Lift Carefully

Most home improvement centers will sell 2-ft.-sq. pieces of drywall, these are good for making minor repairs. However, when dealing with extensive damage, we at Killeen Drywall and Painting recommend that you purchase 4×8-ft. sheets of drywall, and then cut them to size. But, be advised that a sheet of standard 1/2-in. drywall can weigh around 54 lbs.

Plus, drywall sheets are not easy to lift or carry. To avoid pulling your back out, always work with someone, and remember, to lift with your knees, never your back. Also, be careful when leaning drywall sheets, if a sheet falls over, it can severely injure someone, especially children.

Empty Bucket Warning

Premixed joint compounds are available in different-sized buckets, all of which are handy to use around your home and yard once they are empty. But, please note that 5-gallon buckets can be a serious threat to toddlers. These buckets are the right height for a small child to tumble in headfirst in, and often impossible to get out of. Therefore, if you use this bucket to carry water, never leave it unattended, even if it only holds a few inches of water. And never leave buckets outside where they can fill with rainwater, this could be a potential drowning hazard.
