Drywall Installation Solutions

Easy Solutions to Common Drywall Problems

Going down the DIY route when it comes to drywall installation can be a good project for several reasons. Such as drywall installers being in short supply, and if you are lucky enough to find a good installer, the cost of their labor may come as somewhat of a shock to you. Drywall work is a job that some handy homeowners can do themselves, however, there are pitfalls that you need to be aware of.

Drywall should never be used as a stud

Problem

All edges of drywall must be affixed to a solid surface like a stud. A hanging drywall edge can work for the short-term, however, when it comes to the long-term, it will often result in cracks and other serious issues. Sometimes, drywall does not reach a stud. Less often, drywall will not be able to vertically reach a solid attachment.

Solution

When drywall extends slightly beyond a stud, it needs to be cut vertically so it hits the center point of a stud. If the drywall is slightly too short, a second stud will need to be sistered up to the first stud, thus providing an attachment point for the drywall.

Drywall that is sanded too much

Problem

In an effort to obtain a smooth surface, most DIY drywallers will vigorously sand the cured mud compound and joints. However, when you sand too far, you run the risk of sanding into the paper or fiberglass that covers the seams, or even worse, into the surface of the surrounding drywall, which will compromise the integrity of the installation altogether. Most homeowners end up retaping the seams as they were too aggressive in their sanding.

Solution

Check your sanding progress by installing a light placed at a low angle to the wall. This highlights any rises or bumps.
