Rookie Mistakes to Avoid
The following are a few rookie drywall and painting mistakes to avoid when you want a more professional-looking finish.
Not Clearing The Room
There is nothing worse than trying to paint around furniture. So before you start any painting job, clear the room as much as you can, and put drop cloths on the floor and remaining furniture.
Not Buying Enough Paint
One of the most common mistakes is underestimating how much paint you will need to buy. Sloppy measurements or “guesstimating” will often result in homeowners miscalculating the amount of paint needed to do the job.
Skimping on Tools
Even though it is tempting to buy budget brushes and rollers to save money, however, the quality of your paint job often rests on the quality of your tools. Cheap roller covers or brushes will result in sloppy-looking workmanship that will show tracking, fuzz, streaks, and brush marks.
You will also need to match your roller with the surface that you are painting to avoid bubbling or blistering paint. Foam or short-nap rollers are better suited for smooth surfaces, medium-nap rollers for rough surfaces, and long-nap roller covers on textured surfaces.
Skipping the Prep Stage
Many DIY painters want to jump straight into the painting without first taking the time to prepare the surface first. When a surface is dirty, damp, or not primed properly, the drying paint can often start to detach and form unsightly bubbles or blisters.
Wash the surface with some water, rinse and dry. Patch and sand any holes or indentations and remove any dust with a clean, damp rag. Apply a primer where needed to mask stains or to increase adherence on bare drywall. Only once this has been completed will the surface be ready to paint.
